Maiden vs. Married

  • Ahh.. The infamous Married ro Maiden name.  Some debate about if the name should even be changed after marriage.  Most female MD's never change their names because of legal and tax purposes, nevermind the complication of changing all Licensing, Certification, and other Diploma related items.  But here is my dilemma...

I married a man with the last name Ranese.  It is a rare last name.  A name given to my ex-husband's grandfather when he got off the boat at Ellis Island, from Sicily, because he could not speak English, and did not know how to say his name in American, so they slapped him with a name that was spelled wrong (was supposed to be Ranesi.. I know.. I know..).  So, there are only my ex-husband's family with this name, so it is not hard to play with Ancestry.com and quickly end up with.. nothing.  I kept the name, mainly because I did not want to have to go back to the Social Security Office, wait in line, fill out paperwork, wait for a new Social Security Card, blah, blah, blah.. Then have to go to City Hall, get a copy of my Marriage License (I have needed this more since I have gotten Divorced than I ever needed it while married), proof of Divorce (gotta love court), and my new Social Security card, and go to the RMV, which we all love to stand in line and wait hours on end to look at people who look like they are sitting in the Salem Witch Trial court system, are mean, rude, obnoxious, and do not want to be there, only to find out you are in the wrong line, and have to do it all over again.. MUAHAHA!  God.. I want to know how to get that job.

Ok.. back to the point.  Ok, so my daughter, who is 8, has the same last night as my ex-husband, and myself, but now that I have been with my boyfriend for longer than a year, and I beleive he will soon ask me to marry him, I have started to debate on the removal of a certain married title (Ranese) and going back to my maiden name.  A last name that is both just as easily mis-pronounced, and has been repeatedly re-spelled due to language barriers for centuries.  My maiden name is Mattice.  Not as easily with Ancestry.com.  My last name is rare, oh yes, but there are thousands of us and apparently, we are in hiding because I never run into another one of me...ever.  LOL!

So, I ask of you all.  Please, let me know your opinion.  Should I remove of the Ranese, and return to the Mattice?  Should I keep the Ranese and remove of and replace with the new B/F if he asks me to marry and we do indeed marry?  Do I say "why bother with this entire blog"?  Please!  Help me!  My mother says keep it and why bother... She is no help at all!  GIve me your opinions!  Please!

    Thank you!
