Sojourner Robert Hess

on simple majority, and perception over reality

  • I read recently a rant about just how unfair it was that Christian hollidays should be recognised by the US Government...

hold up, there's only one federal holiday that fits that bill... one out of 10 in total.

That day would be Christmas... a day also marked by other religions as the winter solstice (or near enough too)

    Let's face some facts...

    in 2008 Census reported

76% of reponding Adults self identified as Christian.

    That's well over a 2/3 Majority.

Majorities change, if over 2/3 of Adults had self identified as Islamic then the ONE religiously themed federal holiday might become Ramadan.

    Recognition is NOT Endorsement!

No one is required by law to have Christmas parties or decorations, infact the only stipulation reguarding federal holidays is that if a business is open they pay "holiday hours" to workers.

Sojourner Robert Hess I get where you are coming from, Brother. My point here is more a reality check.. there is no "Christian privilege" here, just a matter of simple math and majority politics. As I said, Majorities change.. this is something the founders knew quite well.

Sojourner Robert Hess Actually, and I point this out only to remain factually correct, on a global scale Christianity only represents about 31%. That's not even a Simple Majority , which would have to be >50%.

Brian Woodward I would suppose that Jehovah's Witnesses would dislike most of the US federal holidays. hāligdæg means "Holy day" anyway, so someone will be irked. Ranters like to rant.
