20 Paces is a Long Way

  • Ready to write at the drop of a hat--six pens he kept on his side. His pockets were filled with refills--his notebook margins were wide. There was always a piece of paper, or two, in the back of the pants he wore. "Be ready to write at the drop of a hat." was the oath that he once swore. He wasn't a paid reporter; no bylines carried his name. Writing was something that he just did--you could say that it was his game. He could write with both hands if he needed to--if the occasion would ever arise. He could write upside down and backward without even opening his eyes. There were times that the words flew off of the pen like the song of an auctioneer. Sometimes the message was clouded and sometimes the message was clear. You might think that our lad would ride on a horse and sport a ten gallon hat. He never quite learned how to ride one--it's one place that he never sat. He did wear boots on occasion when traveling out and about. He's a medium #2 cowboy--of that I haven't a doubt. When asked if he needed protection when traveling about in the night. He told me the pen trumped the sword every time--I believe that the cowboy was right.~Jay O.
