Respect is by nature non-discriminatory and requires acceptance of others as Children of the Same Universe that is Diverse. There is one principle that solves the social dilemnas quite effectively it seems and that is to focus on our common ground which is that respect for ALL LIFE as sacred means we bring NO HARM to others in the process of exercising our "freedom". In order for this to work we must, ironically, restrict everyone's freedom with the boundaries that assure safety for everyone, e.g. red light, green light, don't drive drunk, etc.
This also means we should not tell someone whom to marry or partner with. What makes another happy, as long as it does not bring harm to others, appears to be a worldwide yardstick for determining the difference between right and wrong action and it is, indeed ACTIONS, not opinions, that truly count in the end.
