Depending on one's school of thought and training, the words "respect" and "tolerance" take on different meanings. In the Social Sciences both require acknowledging the actual existence of an entity or idea to prove one's social maturity. Treating an entity the way you would want to be treated IF you were them is how some schools define respect. Tolerance on the other hand usually connotes "putting up with" or "working around" that entity in a segregated fashion, an approach that hinges on avoiding confrontation to keep the peace or to reduce harm. For example, if I respect FIRE I acknowledge its power and learn to cooperate with it to access its good qualities. If I tolerate FIRE I avoid it altogether. If you "play" with fire you get burnt. If you respect fire, you get to eat.
