Actually that is the Palo Mayombe, a religion originating in the African Congo Bantu. Today is widespread in Latin America, North America and Europe. For many it is a black art. The reason for this is that in that religion working with the spiritual world and the dead but nothing further from reality. Palo Mayombe is a religion and as such is a part of magic as anything can be used for good or for ill. The priest or priestess in africa called Nganga change in current in Latin American is called tata or yaya.
Palo Mayombe is a religion where as I said before working with the spiritual world. This spiritual world is divided into mpungus (upper series), Nfumbes (dead), nfiris (spirits). All are dual beings can be used for good or ill.
The priest or priestess of Palo Mayombe is a Wizard, Sorcerer, Warlock, Shaman, Priest, religious leader.
It is also a religion that respects the very nature much and in which its members live in coexistence with it.
There are differences between the African and Latin American traditions.
Among them is that in Africa alone knows Palo Mayombe Palo Mayombe, does not refer to the Yoruba religion (osha and ifa) nor the African Yoruba religion refers to African Palo Mayombe.
This is not so in Latin America that if mutual references are made as both religions to survive were mixed among many other reasons why elderly priests both religion of Palo Mayombe and Yoruba in the period of slavery did not survive the trip and mixed in the barracks different religions and believe what today is known as the Diaspora.
I hope that this has served as an introduction to Palo Mayombe. In future blogs I'll talk more in detail about the religion and Yoruba.
