An Alien's View of Earth (Re: Gay Rights)

  • Would anyone say to someone who's African-American, Asian, or Hispanic, "You're not white. There's something inherently wrong with you. We can fix that."

For too long, that is how our society has treated the LGBTQ community: "You're not heterosexual. You're mentally disturbed. We can fix that."

For millennia, we've sought to force our fellow citizens to conform to the diktats of a 3,000-year-old "sacred" book (large sections of which are now outdated and/or irrelevant).  The Bible was written during an era when men were convinced that the sun revolved around the earth and that the earth itself was the center of the universe (as opposed to being one tiny planet among billions of possible worlds ... worlds harboring just as many possible civilizations).

Imagine quotng Genesis 1 to an alien from another planet:

"In the Beginning, [our parochial, Hebrew-speaking] God created the heavens and the earth.  Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.

And [our parochial, Hebrew-speaking] God said, 'Let there be light,' and there was light. God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness. [Our parochial, Hebrew-speaking] God called the light 'day,' and the darkness he called 'night.' And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day.

And God said, 'Let there be a vault between the waters to separate water from water.'  So God made the vault and separated the water under the vault from the water above it. And it was so. God called the vault 'sky.' And there was evening, and there was morning—the second day.

And [our parochial, Hebrew-speaking] God said, 'Let the water under the sky be gathered to one place, and let dry ground appear.' And it was so.  God called the dry ground 'land,' and the gathered waters he called 'seas.' And [our parochial, Hebrew-speaking] God saw that it was good."  (Emphasis mine)

What would said alien think of us as we described the works of our supposedly "all-powerful", parochial, Hebrew-speaking "God"?  They might well find us arrogant (and at best, naive). They might well proclaim, "No, no, no ... it was the Great God of (Talax/Zebulon 429/Cardassia/etc.) who created the universe".

(And the earth is plunged into an interstellar religious war shortly thereafter ... but I digress.)

Let's recap for a moment what we've taught ourselves (and our children) about marriage for the past several thousand years:

    • Heterosexual marriage:  "Sacred", "Holy"
    • LGBTQ marriage:  "Hedonistic" (something akin to a wild weekend in Vegas ... "Hey, let's get married!  It'll be fun!")

No HETEROSEXUAL couple would EVER get married on a lark now, would they?  (Note dripping sarcasm.)

What's the worst that could happen?  LGBTQ couples would do a better job of upholding the sacredness of the institution of marriage than heterosexual couples?   (Over half of all heterosexual marriages end in divorce.)
