2 Peter 2:20-22
For if after they have escaped the filthy things of the world through the rich knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they again get entangled in them and succumb to them, their last state has become worse for them than their first. For it would have been better for them never to have known the way of righteousness than, having known it, to turn back from the holy commandment that had been delivered to them. They are illustrations of this true proverb: “A dog returns to its own vomit,” and “A sow, after washing herself, wallows in the mire.”
For as long as we live on this earth, threats to our faith will come for us. In Genesis 4:7, the Lord said to Cain, “If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it.” Believing in Christ and following Him does not remove temptation, and it invites persecution and trials. The challenge to those who follow Jesus is to rule over the sin that crouches at our door. Our hope in Christ is like no other, and He alone is the bread of life. He promises to go with us, and has given us the Holy Spirit who has made His home in us. When we sin, He urges us to repentance. John 15:5 says, “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.”
