Mark 15:16-20
So the soldiers led him into the palace (that is, the governor’s residence) and called together the whole cohort. They put a purple cloak on him and after braiding a crown of thorns, they put it on him. They began to salute him: “Hail, king of the Jews!” Again and again they struck him on the head with a staff and spit on him. Then they knelt down and paid homage to him. When they had finished mocking him, they stripped him of the purple cloak and put his own clothes back on him. Then they led him away to crucify him.
Injustice runs rampant as we take a look at Jesus’ road to the cross. It begins with the malice in the hearts of the Sanhedrin, seeking to kill Him. An opportunity arises through Judas Iscariot, who agrees to betray Jesus for money. Captured in Gethsemane, he is ultimately led to Pontius Pilate, who finds that He has committed no crime. To solidify the intentions of the chief priests, when given a choice to release a murder or Jesus, they choose to release Barabbas, the murder. Mark 15:15 says “He had Jesus flogged, and handed him over to be crucified”. An entire company of soldiers is called to flog Jesus. Isaiah 53:5 (NKJV) says, “But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement for our peace was upon Him, and by His stripes we are healed”. God loves us more than we can ever imagine.
