Ecclesiastes 4:9-12
Two people are better than one, because they can reap more benefit from their labor. For if they fall, one will help his companion up, but pity the person who falls down and has no one to help him up. Furthermore, if two lie down together, they can keep each other warm, but how can one person keep warm by himself? Although an assailant may overpower one person, two can withstand him. Moreover, a three-stranded cord is not quickly broken.
Two is better than one. In verse 8, this argument begins by speaking about a man all alone. There is no end to his toil, and he is never satisfied with what he has. While two is better, we read on to find that “a cord of three strands” is not easily broken! Matthew 18:19-20 Jesus says, “Again, truly I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything they ask for, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven. For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.” Who is the third strand? Jesus. Our relationships throughout the body of Christ are not simply founded on the shaky ground of our own promises and effort. Our marriages are cords of three strands, not quickly broken. Our friendships are cords of three strands, not quickly broken. We have entered into relationship with the living God, who is with us!
