2 Peter 2:18-19
For by speaking high-sounding but empty words they are able to entice, with fleshly desires and with debauchery, people who have just escaped from those who reside in error. Although these false teachers promise such people freedom, they themselves are enslaved to immorality. For whatever a person succumbs to, to that he is enslaved.
The NLT says, “For you are a slave to whatever controls you”. Another mark of a false teacher is that they lure you back into sin by their actions and words. Many things can become our masters if we let our guards down. It was lust mastering David’s heart when he looked on another man’s wife and took action. Unfortunately, unlike David, false teachers don’t repent, they instead revel in their wrongdoing. It is important to be clear about what controls us, because as God’s cherished children we have been designed to thrive when He is on the throne of our hearts. We can be mastered by desires (lust, greed), or emotions (fear, shame, doubt) or a host of other things. You were bought by God, and the price was Jesus. “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.” (Deuteronomy 6:5)
