The Hebrew Scriptures reveal the laws of the Goel. If a woman’s husband died leaving her no children, his brother or nearest male relative could redeem her life by marrying her and by giving her children. He would be called the “Goel.” Throughout the Bible, God is called “the Redeemer” or “your Redeemer.” But the word translated as “Redeemer” in our English Bibles is actually the Hebrew word “Goel.” The Lord is not only the one who redeems you – He is your Goel. And what is the Goel? The Goel is the one who has compassion on the sorrowful, the barren, the lost, and the one who thinks that their life is over. The Goel loves that one and marries himself to that one. The Goel takes away the shame and the reproach of that life and makes that barren life fruitful, restored, and blessed. So as it is for Israel, so too for you. God is your Goel who loves you, who marries Himself to you. He removes your shame and makes your life fruitful. Be blessed today. For the Lord is not only your Redeemer – He’s your Goel!
