And when they had come into the house,
they saw the young Child with Mary His mother,
and fell down and worshiped Him.
And when they had opened their treasures,
they presented gifts to Him:
gold, frankincense, and myrrh.
Jesus was a Young Child when the wise men came to Bethlehem to give Him gifts and to worship Him. The title “Young Child” means more than a baby in arms. Jesus was an infant, perhaps crawling or maybe even walking. This suggests that there was a period of time between the shepherds’ visit and the wise men’s visit. It shouldn’t surprise us that the Young Child grew (Luke 2:40, Luke 2:52), for that’s what children do. It shouldn’t surprise us that the wise men of understanding and position would do what they did. “They saw the young Child . . . and fell down and worshiped Him” (Matthew 2:11). Most people only cuddle young children or enjoy their antics; but if it’s Jesus, you worship Him as God. What is your response to Jesus, the Young Child?
Lord Jesus, I worship at the feet of the Child Jesus, because He is God. But I also worship at Your feet in Heaven for what You did on the cross.
The wise men worshiped the Young Child with gifts.; “And when they had opened their treasures, they presented gifts to Him: gold, frankincense, and myrrh” (Matthew 2:11). Today, when you visit a newborn baby and family, you take a gift. What the wise men did is what you should do. What are you taking to Jesus today?
Lord Jesus, I come to worship, giving You my time, my talent and my treasure. But beyond those things, I give You my greatest gift; I give You myself. Amen.
