'The humble shall see and be glad...' Psalm 69:32. How profound that humility and gladness go together. What do humble and joyous people have in common? They both look up. The truly humble don't look down on anyone; they look up. They have to look up because their eyes are on God and He's above them. And the joyous always look up; otherwise, they wouldn't be rejoicing, for they are believing the good news, so they rejoice. For the joyous, things are looking up, or rather, for the joyous, the joyous are looking up. The prideful, on the other hand are those who think they're above everything else and so they look down. The prideful are connected to others who look down: the cynical, the doubting, the despairing, the depressed, the sorrowful, and the hopeless. Pride leads to despair, but humility leads to joy. Get your eyes off yourself, off your problem, off the world. Fix your eyes on God. That means you're going to have to look up. Get into the blessing of seeing God, the blessing of the humble. For those who look up in humility and faith, also look up in joy.
