The Holy Spirit: Divided Tongues as of Fire
Then there appeared to them
divided tongues, as of fire,
and one sat upon each of them.
The Holy Spirit is Divided Tongues as of Fire that came upon the disciples in the Upper Room on the Day of Pentecost. They had been praying for 40 days when the Holy Spirit came upon them. The sign of tongues in the air was not illusionary; it was real. The Holy Spirit entered their lives and spoke through them with different languages. Jesus had told them to preach the gospel to all people: “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations [ethnic groups]” (Matthew 28:19). So the Holy Spirit gave them different languages to speak to all people. This means that He can give you the ability to speak your language to those who are not Christians. But more than giving knowledge of a foreign language, the Holy Spirit, through their words, convicted of sin, exalted Jesus through their lives and drew people to salvation. Let the Holy Spirit speak through you today.
Holy Spirit, come fill my life with Your presence. Speak through my words to my friends and associates who need Your salvation.
The Divided Tongues as of Fire can purify you just as fire burns away impurities. The Holy Spirit can cleanse your tongue and clean up your thoughts. You can speak the pure Word of God from a clean heart. And just as fire burns everything it touches, the Holy Spirit can cause the message to burn in the hearts of those who listen to you.
Holy Spirit, I will testify to some people who need Your salvation today. When I speak, fill my words with fire. Help me bring my friends to faith in Christ. Amen.
