O God, come to our aid.
O Lord, make haste to help us.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son
        and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning,
is now, and ever shall be,
        world without end.
    Amen. Alleluia.

    ________

    Hymn

    All hail the power of Jesus’ name;
        Let Angels prostrate fall;
    Bring forth the royal diadem
To crown him Lord of all.

Crown him, ye Martyrs of your God,
        Who from his altar call;
Praise him whose way of pain ye trod,
And crown him Lord of all.

Hail him, ye heirs of David’s line,
        Whom David Lord did call;
    The God Incarnate, Man Divine,
And crown him Lord of all.

Let every tribe and every tongue
        To him their hearts enthral,
    Lift high the universal song,
And crown him Lord of all.

    Psalm 2
    The Messiah, king and victor

“They rose up together against your servant Jesus, whom you had anointed” (Acts 4:27).

Stephen was filled with the Holy Spirit and he gazed into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of the Father.

Whý this túmult among nátions, *
        among péoples this úseless múrmuring?
They aríse, the kíngs of the éarth, *
princes plót against the Lórd and his Anóinted.
‘Cóme, let us bréak their fétters, *
cóme, let us cást off their yóke.’

He who síts in the héavens láughs; *
the Lórd is láughing them to scórn.
Thén he will spéak in his ánger, *
his ráge will stríke them with térror.
‘It is Í who have sét up my kíng *
        on Síon, my hóly móuntain.’

I will annóunce the decrée of the Lórd: †
The Lórd said to me: ‘Yóu are my Són. *
It is Í who have begótten you this dáy.
Ásk and I shall bequéath you the nátions, *
put the énds of the éarth in your posséssion.
With a ród of íron you will bréak them, *
shátter them like a pótter’s jár.’

    Nów, O kíngs, understánd, *
        take wárning, rúlers of the éarth;
sérve the Lórd with áwe *
and trémbling, páy him your hómage
lést he be ángry and you pérish; *
for súddenly his ánger will bláze.

Blessed are théy who put their trúst in Gód.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son
        and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning,
is now, and ever shall be,
        world without end.
    Amen.

Stephen was filled with the Holy Spirit and he gazed into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of the Father.

    Psalm-prayer

Lord God, you gave the peoples of the world as the inheritance of your only Son; you crowned him as King of Zion, your holy city, and gave him your Church to be his Bride. As he proclaims the law of your eternal kingdom, may we serve him faithfully, and so share his royal power for ever.

    Psalm 10 (11)
The Lord, support of the just

“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for what is right: they shall be satisfied” (Mt 5:6).

Stephen knelt down and cried out, ‘Lord Jesus, do not hold this sin against them.’

In the Lórd I have táken my réfuge. †
Hów can you sáy to my sóul: *
‘Flý like a bírd to its móuntain.

See the wícked brácing their bów; *
they are fíxing their árrows on the stríng
to shóot upright mén in the dárk. *
Foundátions once destróyed, what can the júst do?’

The Lórd is in his hóly témple, *
the Lórd, whose thróne is in héaven.
His éyes look dówn on the wórld; *
        his gáze tests mórtal mén.

The Lórd tests the júst and the wícked; *
the lóver of víolence he hátes.
He sends fíre and brímstone on the wícked; *
he sends a scórching wínd as their lót.

The Lórd is júst and loves jústice; *
the úpright shall sée his fáce.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son
        and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning,
is now, and ever shall be,
        world without end.
    Amen.

Stephen knelt down and cried out, ‘Lord Jesus, do not hold this sin against them.’

    Psalm-prayer

Lord God, you search the hearts of all, both the good and the wicked. May those who are in danger for love of you, find security in you now, and, in the day of judgement, may they rejoice in seeing you face to face.

    Psalm 16 (17)
    Save me from wrongdoers

“During his life on earth he offered up prayer, which was heard” (Heb 5:7).

No one could withstand the wisdom with which Stephen spoke, since he was inspired by the Holy Spirit.

Lórd, hear a cáuse that is júst, *
        pay héed to my crý.
Túrn your éar to my práyer: *
no decéit is on my líps.

From yóu may my júdgement come fórth. *
        Your éyes discern the trúth.

You séarch my héart, you vísit me by níght. †
You tést me and you fínd in mé no wróng. *
My wórds are not sínful as are mén’s wórds.

I képt from víolence becáuse of your wórd, †
I képt my féet fírmly in your páths; *
there wás no fáltering ín my stéps.

I am hére and I cáll, you will héar me, O Gód. *
Túrn your éar to me; héar my wórds.
Displáy your great lóve, yóu whose right hand sáves *
your fríends from thóse who rebél agáinst them.

Gúard me as the ápple of your éye. †
Híde me in the shádow of your wíngs *
from the víolent attáck of the wícked.

My fóes encírcle me with déadly intént. †
Their héarts tight shút, their móuths speak próudly. *
They advánce agáinst me, and nów they surróund me.

Their éyes are wátching to stríke me to the gróund, †
as thóugh they were líons réady to cláw *
or líke some young líon cróuched in híding.

Lord, aríse, confrónt them, stríke them dówn! *
        Let your swórd réscue my sóul from the wícked;
let your hánd, O Lórd, réscue me from mén, *
from mén whose rewárd is in this présent lífe.

You gíve them their fíll of your tréasures; †
they rejóice in abúndance of óffspring *
and léave their wéalth to their chíldren.

As for mé, in my jústice I shall sée your fáce *

        and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning,
is now, and ever shall be,
        world without end.
    Amen.

No one could withstand the wisdom with which Stephen spoke, since he was inspired by the Holy Spirit.

    Psalm-prayer

Turn our eyes to see the truth of your judgements, Lord, that, when our spirits are tried by fire, the anticipation of seeing you may make us rejoice in your justice.

    Or:

When your Son was unjustly condemned, Lord God, and surrounded by the impious, he cried to you and you set him free. Watch over your people as the treasure of your heart and guide their steps along safe paths that they may see your face.

℣. Anguish and distress have taken hold of me.
℟. Yet will I delight in your commands.

    ________

    First Reading
    Acts 6:8-7:2,44-8:1

Stephen was filled with grace and power and began to work miracles and great signs among the people. But then certain people came forward to debate with Stephen, some from Cyrene and Alexandria who were members of the synagogue called the Synagogue of Freedmen, and others from Cilicia and Asia. They found they could not get the better of him because of his wisdom, and because it was the Spirit that prompted what he said. So they procured some men to say, ‘We heard him using blasphemous language against Moses and against God.’ Having in this way turned the people against him as well as the elders and scribes, they took Stephen by surprise, and arrested him and brought him before the Sanhedrin. There they put up false witnesses to say, ‘This man is always making speeches against this Holy Place and the Law. We have heard him say that Jesus the Nazarene is going to destroy this Place and alter the traditions that Moses handed down to us.’ The members of the Sanhedrin all looked intently at Stephen, and his face appeared to them like the face of an angel.
The high priest asked, ‘Is this true?’ He replied, ‘My brothers, my fathers, listen to what I have to say. While they were in the desert our ancestors possessed the Tent of Testimony that had been constructed according to the instructions God gave Moses, telling him to make an exact copy of the pattern he had been shown. It was handed down from one ancestor of ours to another until Joshua brought it into the country we had conquered from the nations which were driven out by God as we advanced. Here it stayed until the time of David. He won God’s favour and asked permission to have a temple built for the House of Jacob, though it was Solomon who actually built God’s house for him. Even so the Most High does not live in a house that human hands have built: for as the prophet says:

    With heaven my throne
    and earth my footstool,
what house could you build me,
what place could you make for my rest?
Was not all this made by my hand?

‘You stubborn people, with your pagan hearts and pagan ears. You are always resisting the Holy Spirit, just as your ancestors used to do. Can you name a single prophet your ancestors never persecuted? In the past they killed those who foretold the coming of the Just One, and now you have become his betrayers, his murderers. You who had the Law brought to you by angels are the very ones who have not kept it.’
They were infuriated when they heard this, and ground their teeth at him.
But Stephen, filled with the Holy Spirit, gazed into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at God’s right hand. ‘I can see heaven thrown open’ he said ‘and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God.’ At this all the members of the council shouted out and stopped their ears with their hands; then they all rushed at him, sent him out of the city and stoned him. The witnesses put down their clothes at the feet of a young man called Saul. As they were stoning him, Stephen said in invocation, ‘Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.’ Then he knelt down and said aloud, ‘Lord, do not hold this sin against them’; and with these words he fell asleep. Saul entirely approved of the killing.

    Responsory

℟. While the Jews were stoning him, Stephen, the servant of God, saw the heavens opened; he saw and entered in:* blessed is the man to whom the heavens were thrown open.
℣. Even while he was being done to death by a hail of clattering stones, the splendour of God shone upon him in the inmost recesses of the court of heaven:* blessed is the man to whom the heavens were thrown open.

    Second Reading
A sermon of St Fulgentius of Ruspe
    The armour of love

Yesterday we celebrated the birth in time of our eternal King. Today we celebrate the triumphant suffering of his soldier.
Yesterday our king, clothed in his robe of flesh, left his place in the virgin’s womb and graciously visited the world. Today his soldier leaves the tabernacle of his body and goes triumphantly to heaven.
Our king, despite his exalted majesty, came in humility for our sake; yet he did not come empty-handed. He brought his soldiers a great gift that not only enriched them but also made them unconquerable in battle, for it was the gift of love, which was to bring men to share in his divinity. He gave of his bounty, yet without any loss to himself. In a marvellous way he changed into wealth the poverty of his faithful followers while remaining in full possession of his own inexhaustible riches.
And so the love that brought Christ from heaven to earth raised Stephen from earth to heaven; shown first in the king, it later shone forth in his soldier. Love was Stephen’s weapon by which he gained every battle, and so won the crown signified by his name. His love of God kept him from yielding to the ferocious mob; his love for his neighbour made him pray for those who were stoning him. Love inspired him to reprove those who erred, to make them amend; love led him to pray for those who stoned him, to save them from punishment. Strengthened by the power of his love, he overcame the raging cruelty of Saul and won his persecutor on earth as his companion in heaven. In his holy and tireless love he longed to gain by prayer those whom he could not convert by admonition.
Now at last, Paul rejoices with Stephen, with Stephen he delights in the glory of Christ, with Stephen he exults, with Stephen he reigns. Stephen went first, slain by the stones thrown by Paul, but Paul followed after, helped by the prayer of Stephen. This, surely, is the true life, my brothers, a life in which Paul feels no shame because of Stephen’s death, and Stephen delights in Paul’s companionship, for love fills them both with joy. It was Stephen’s love that prevailed over the cruelty of the mob, and it was Paul’s love that covered the multitude of his sins; it was love that won for both of them the kingdom of heaven.
Love, indeed, is the source of all good things; it is an impregnable defence, and the way that leads to heaven. He who walks in love can neither go astray nor be afraid: love guides him, protects him, and brings him to his journey’s end.
My brothers, Christ made love the stairway that would enable all Christians to climb to heaven. Hold fast to it, therefore, in all sincerity, give one another practical proof of it, and by your progress in it, make your ascent together.

    Responsory

℟. Yesterday the Lord was born on earth, that Stephen might be born in heaven;* he entered into the world, that Stephen might enter into heaven.
℣. Yesterday our king came forth from the virgin’s womb, clothed in a garment of flesh;* he entered into the world, that Stephen might enter into heaven.

    Te Deum

We praise you, O God: *
we acclaim you as the Lord.

        Everlasting Father, *
all the world bows down before you.

All the angels sing your praise, *
the hosts of heaven and all the angelic powers,

all the cherubim and seraphim *
call out to you in unending song:

        Holy, Holy, Holy, *
is the Lord God of angel hosts!

The heavens and the earth are filled *
    with your majesty and glory.

The glorious band of apostles, *
        the noble company of prophets,

the white-robed army who shed their blood for Christ, *
    all sing your praise.

And to the ends of the earth *
your holy Church proclaims her faith in you:

Father, whose majesty is boundless, *
your true and only Son, who is to be adored, *
the Holy Spirit sent to be our Advocate.

You, Christ, are the king of glory, *
    Son of the eternal Father.

When you took our nature to save mankind *
you did not shrink from birth in the Virgin’s womb.

You overcame the power of death *
opening the Father’s kingdom to all who believe in you.

Enthroned at God’s right hand in the glory of the Father, *
you will come in judgement according to your promise.

You redeemed your people by your precious blood. *
Come, we implore you, to our aid.

Grant us with the saints *
        a place in eternal glory.

The final part of the hymn may be omitted:

    Lord, save your people *
    and bless your inheritance.

Rule them and uphold them *
        for ever and ever.

Day by day we praise you: *
we acclaim you now and to all eternity.

In your goodness, Lord, keep us free from sin. *
Have mercy on us, Lord, have mercy.

May your mercy always be with us, Lord, *
for we have hoped in you.

In you, Lord, we put our trust: *
we shall not be put to shame.

as he prómised by the líps of holy mén, *
thóse who were his próphets from of óld.

A sáviour who would frée us from our fóes, *
from the hánds of áll who háte us.
So his lóve for our fáthers is fulfílled *
        and his hóly covenant remémbered.

He swóre to Ábraham our fáther to gránt us, *
that frée from féar, and sáved from the hánds of our fóes,
we might sérve him in hóliness and jústice *
all the dáys of our lífe in his présence.

As for yóu, little chíld, *
you shall be cálled a próphet of Gód, the Most Hígh.
You shall go ahéad of the Lórd *
to prépare his wáys befóre him,

To make knówn to his péople their salvátion *
through forgíveness of áll their síns,
the loving-kíndness of the héart of our Gód *
who vísits us like the dáwn from on hígh.

He will give líght to those in dárkness, †
those who dwéll in the shádow of déath, *
and gúide us into the wáy of péace.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son
        and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning,
is now, and ever shall be,
        world without end.
    Amen.

The gates of heaven were thrown open for Saint Stephen, who was the first follower of Christ to receive the martyr’s crown.

    ________

    Prayers and intercessions

Let us give thanks for Saint Stephen, whose life on earth was lived in the service of Christ, and who came at his death to witness to Christ with his blood.
    – We give you thanks, O Lord.

For all who have found the freedom to lay down their lives for your sake:
    – We give you thanks, O Lord.

For all whose desire for you has brought them through death with a joyful heart:
    – We give you thanks, O Lord.

For all who have followed, through suffering, the way of the cross:
    – We give you thanks, O Lord.

For all who have undergone martyrdom for the gospel:
    – We give you thanks, O Lord.

    ________

Our Father, who art in heaven,
        hallowed be thy name.
    Thy kingdom come.
Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
        and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us,
and lead us not into temptation,
        but deliver us from evil.

    ________

Give us grace, Lord, to practise what we worship.
Teach us to love our enemies
as we keep the feast of Saint Stephen,
who prayed even for the men who stoned him to death.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.
    Amen.

    ________

The Lord bless us, and keep us from all evil, and bring us to everlasting life.
        Amen.
