    3rd Sunday of Easter

    Morning Prayer (Lauds)

    Introduction (without Invitatory)

If this is the first Hour that you are reciting today, use the version with the Invitatory Psalm instead.

O God, come to our aid.
O Lord, make haste to help us.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son
    and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning,
is now, and ever shall be,
    world without end.
    Amen. Alleluia.

    ________

    Hymn

Light’s glittering morn bedecks the sky,
Heav’n thunders forth its victor cry:
The glad earth shouts her triumph high,
And groaning hell makes wild reply.

While he, the King of sovereign might,
Treads down death’s strength in death’s despite,
And trampling hell by victor’s right,
Brings forth his sleeping saints to light.

Fast barred beneath the stone of late,
In watch and ward where soldiers wait,
    Now shining in triumphant state,
He rises victor from death’s gate.

Hell’s pains are loosed and tears are fled:
    Captivity is captive led:
The angel, crowned with light, hath said:
‘The Lord is risen from the dead.’

Author of all, be thou our guide
    In this our joy of Eastertide;
    Whene’er assaults of death impend,
    Thy people strengthen and defend.

To thee who, dead, again dost live,
All glory, Lord, thy people give:
All glory, as is ever meet,
    To Father and to Paraclete.

    ________

    Psalm 92 (93)
    The magnificence of the Creator

“The Lord, our God, the Almighty is king: let us be glad and rejoice and give him praise” (Rev 19:6,7).

The Lord is king, with majesty enrobed. Alleluia.

    The Lord is king, with majesty enrobed;
the Lord has robed himself with might,
he has girded himself with power.

    The world you made firm, not to be moved;
your throne has stood firm from of old.
From all eternity, O Lord, you are.

The waters have lifted up, O Lord,
the waters have lifted up their voice,
the waters have lifted up their thunder.

Greater than the roar of mighty waters
more glorious than the surgings of the sea,
the Lord is glorious on high.

Truly your decrees are to be trusted.
Holiness is fitting to your house,
O Lord, until the end of time.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son
    and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning,
is now, and ever shall be,
    world without end.
    Amen.

The Lord is king, with majesty enrobed. Alleluia.

    Psalm-prayer

All power and all authority in heaven and on earth have been given to you, Lord Jesus; you rule with decrees that are firm and trustworthy. Be with us always so that we may make disciples whose holiness will be worthy of your house.

    Or:

Lord Jesus, king of glory, when you rose from death in the power of the Spirit, you firmly established your kingdom not to be shaken or destroyed by death. May your will be done on earth as in heaven until the Church is made holy by your embrace.

    ________

    Psalm 148
An anthem to the Lord, the Creator

“To the One who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be all praise, honour, glory and power, for ever and ever” (Rev 5:13).

The name of the Lord is praised, in heaven and on earth. Alleluia.

Praise the Lord from the heavens,
    praise him in the heights.
    Praise him, all his angels,
    praise him, all his host.

    Praise him, sun and moon,
    praise him, shining stars.
    Praise him, highest heavens
and the waters above the heavens.

Let them praise the name of the Lord.
    He commanded: they were made.
    He fixed them for ever,
gave a law which shall not pass away.

Praise the Lord from the earth,
    sea creatures and all oceans,
fire and hail, snow and mist,
    stormy winds that obey his word;

    all mountains and hills,
    all fruit trees and cedars,
    beasts, wild and tame,
    reptiles and birds on the wing;

    all earth’s kings and peoples,
    earth’s princes and rulers,
    young men and maidens,
    old men together with children.

Let them praise the name of the Lord
    for he alone is exalted.
    The splendour of his name
    reaches beyond heaven and earth.

He exalts the strength of his people.
He is the praise of all his saints,
    of the sons of Israel,
of the people to whom he comes close.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son
    and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning,
is now, and ever shall be,
    world without end.
    Amen.

The name of the Lord is praised, in heaven and on earth. Alleluia.

    Psalm-prayer

Lord, extolled in the heights by angelic powers, you are also praised by all earth’s creatures, each in its own way. With all the splendour of heavenly worship, you still delight in such tokens of love as earth can offer. May heaven and earth together acclaim you as King; may the praise that is sung in heaven resound in the heart of every creature on earth.

    Or:

God most high, by your Word you created a wondrous universe, and through your Spirit you breathed into it the breath of life. Accept creation’s hymn of praise from our lips; may it raise your people above both heaven and earth.

    ________

    Short Reading
    Acts 10:40-43

God raised Jesus to life on the third day and allowed him to be seen, not by the whole people but only by certain witnesses God had chosen beforehand. Now we are those witnesses – we have eaten and drunk with him after his resurrection from the dead – and he has ordered us to proclaim this to his people and to tell them that God has appointed him to judge everyone, alive or dead. It is to him that all the prophets bear this witness: that all who believe in Jesus will have their sins forgiven through his name.

    ________

    Short Responsory

Have mercy on us, Christ, Son of the living God, alleluia, alleluia.
    – Have mercy on us, Christ, Son of the living God, alleluia, alleluia.
You have risen from the dead.
    – Have mercy on us, Christ, Son of the living God, alleluia, alleluia.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit.
    – Have mercy on us, Christ, Son of the living God, alleluia, alleluia.

    ________

    Canticle
    Benedictus
The Messiah and the one who was sent before him

Look at my hands and feet; yes, it is I indeed. Touch me and see for yourselves. Alleluia. (Year B)
Or: It was necessary that Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead, alleluia.

Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel!
He has visited his people and redeemed them.

He has raised up for us a mighty saviour
in the house of David his servant,
as he promised by the lips of holy men,
those who were his prophets from of old.

A saviour who would free us from our foes,
from the hands of all who hate us.
So his love for our fathers is fulfilled
    and his holy covenant remembered.

He swore to Abraham our father to grant us,
that free from fear, and saved from the hands of our foes,
we might serve him in holiness and justice
all the days of our life in his presence.

    As for you, little child,
you shall be called a prophet of God, the Most High.
You shall go ahead of the Lord
to prepare his ways before him,

To make known to his people their salvation
through forgiveness of all their sins,
the loving-kindness of the heart of our God
who visits us like the dawn from on high.

He will give light to those in darkness,
those who dwell in the shadow of death,
and guide us into the way of peace.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son
    and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning,
is now, and ever shall be,
    world without end.
    Amen.

Look at my hands and feet; yes, it is I indeed. Touch me and see for yourselves. Alleluia. (Year B)
Or: It was necessary that Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead, alleluia.

    ________

    Prayers and intercessions

Let us pray to Christ, the author of life. God raised him from the dead, and he himself will raise us to life by his own power.
    – Christ, our life, save us.

    Christ, you are the light that drives out darkness and draws men to holiness;
let us make this day a living hymn of praise.
    – Christ, our life, save us.

    Lord, you followed the way of suffering, even to the cross;
grant that we may die with you and come to life with you.
    – Christ, our life, save us.

    Our master and our brother, you have made us a kingdom of priests to serve God our Father;
let us offer you with joy the sacrifice of praise.
    – Christ, our life, save us.

King of glory, we look forward to the day of your coming,
then we shall see your face and share in your splendour.
    – Christ, our life, save us.

    ________

Our Father, who art in heaven,
    hallowed be thy name.
    Thy kingdom come.
Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
    and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us,
and lead us not into temptation,
    but deliver us from evil.

    ________

    Lord God,
    grant your people constant joy
in the renewed vigour of their souls.
They rejoice because you have restored them
to the glory of your adopted children:
    let them look forward gladly
in the certain hope of resurrection.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
    God, for ever and ever.
    Amen.

    ________

The Lord bless us, and keep us from all evil, and bring us to everlasting life.
    Amen.
