The Pentagram/Pentacle.

  • The pentacle and pentagram have long been associated with witchcraft on multiple levels. It is a symbol that evokes mystery within us and instigates a lot of hype when combined with certain situations. It was said that the Zodiac Killer had a pentagram tattooed on his hand, and the pentagram has been associated with the goat head through modern satanism since its conception. What does this mystery symbol mean, is it really demonic? Does it really cause people to be cursed?

Today I am talking about the pentacle/pentagram in its various forms and some of the meaning behind its use.

The first thing to note that I’ve learned is that the pentacle is a five pointed star with the top point being upward and the two bottom points pointing downward, and is in a circle. The classic terms of meaning for this symbol is the five elements (spirit included as an element) and the circle representing the earth. I’ve also heard the five points symbolize the five senses, as well as the circle representing our sixth sense capacity. It also represents the head of a human being, the two hands, and two feet, and thus some christian orientated witches have identified the pentacle with the five wounds of Christ.

Eliphas Levi makes mention of the pentacle, stating to always make the star upright, as the inverted star represents the horns of lust attacking the heavens. Anton Lavey expanded the term of the pentagram to mean matter triumphing over spirit.

In all actuality I see multiple applications possible, and it depends on the persons interpretation of what it means in order for the application to take effect. Some see the pentacle akin to witchcraft as the cross is akin to Christianity. It is a declaration of faith to many, and on this point is the reason I wear my pentacle/pentagram as a necklace to display my choice of faith.

The pentacle is usually associated as the upright star within a circle. The pentagram is either the star alone or the inverted star alone or within a circle. According to the greek language the pentalpha is a five lined star, because Pent means five.

As far as usage goes within witchcraft, it is a cleansing tool that can be used to anoint objects.

The inverted pentagram I see personally as a sign of will power ascending. More akin to the statement of matter triumphing over spirit.

As far as the meaning of the left hand path association and the goathead. In the bible it is declared that the goats will be on the left hand of god, and the sheep on the right hand of god. The left hand path attitude largely is not taking it from the christian type about the authoritative judgement of being on the left and using it as a positive declaration.

I suppose if one were to go existential on the meaning within christian perspective, the inverted pentagram could be applied symbolically to the star of christ, as the point represents the descending of god towards man. But that is a little bit of a far stretch.

Symbology speaks to us on subconscious levels. Symbols like the cross and the pentacle/pentagram instigate meanings on raw levels to our brain about how we apply the term. Carl Jung wrote a book about this called Man and His Symbols, which relates well to the book Interpretation of Dreams by Sigmund Freud.

The pentagram/pentacle, is a symbol. Nothing more, nothing less. And we evoke within ourselves the meaning of these symbols which can lead to hysteria of meanings like curses and possession. I am very much not a fan to horror movies for the consistent application of occult symbols to cause the fear about different beliefs. I feel very frequently that possession is a scam fraud set up for media purposes to follow suit of movies like the Exorcist and the Poltergeist.

It is wise when watching these type of movies to always think first and use practical common sense wisdom to discern what is going on and not get caught up in the fear hype of it all. On the flip side, the use of the word Secret in terms of modern witchcraft is not helping the situation either. Now it more relates to our inner child as a way about a Secret Club to make the individual feel unique according to their own membership to their club. Secret handshakes included.

The simple fact of the matter is that in modern times witchcraft is out in the open now. Whether there are still private family traditions practicing in secrecy or not is mostly irrelevant. We can be our own priests and priestessses, and do our own rituals. Middle men are not needed and one should be excessively cautious about fraud scams of paying too much for tarot for rediculous prices, or paying tithe even to some pastor who becomes wealthy and famous for being a pastor.

If we would tax churches as a country, a lot of our inflation problems would be solved, and people would not so readily be interested in the overall scheme of things to be a pastor or minister.

Common sense wisdom is always best over happy feet to a cause of any type on both sides of the spectrum. Think about things, and weigh pros and cons according to your situation and just be real with yourself about whether witchcraft or christianity or any religion for that matter is the thing really for you on authentic levels.

But most importantly, never give up. I can’t stress that message enough and if I could I would ingraine it subconsciously on mass levels no matter the content of one’s choices. Never, Never, Never give up.

Gail Dobson Love it, Peter C. I wear a pentacle on a pendant and a thumb ring. To me, the circle is the universe, the cosmos, all that is known. Starting at the top point draw a line to the bottom SSW to "earth" the soil beneath our feet, go ENE to "ai...  more

peter Chamberland good point about the directional associations. I didn't think of that within this post until you brought it up. I am a fan to the name of the four winds within greek literature as well for purposes of the four watchtowers.
