The more you know and the better you understand, the more severely will you be judged, unless your life is also the more holy. Do not be proud, therefore, because of your learning or skill. Rather, fear because of the talent given you. If you think you know many things and understand them well enough, realize at the same time that there is much you do not know. Hence, do not affect wisdom, but admit your ignorance. Why prefer yourself to anyone else when many are more learned, more cultured than you?
Kempis, The Imitation of Christ
As the saying goes, "pride comes before the fall." The trouble is, pride can be very subtle, sneaking up on us when we least expect it. While they are many, knowing the signs can be very helpful, if we'd simply pay attention. One of the key signs is that we begin to see ourselves as somehow better or above others for one reason or another. Know that pride is seeking entry into our lives.
