Letters to the Faithful – John 1:8

  • Berean Standard Bible

He himself was not the Light, but he came to testify about the Light.

Grace and peace to you from the eternal God, who in His infinite wisdom has called us to be His witnesses in this age. May your hearts be encouraged and your spirits uplifted as we reflect on the sacred calling entrusted to us.

The Majestic Purpose of the Light

Before the foundations of the world, the Light was. This Light is Christ, through whom all things were made, and without whom nothing came into being (John 1:3). This is no ordinary light. It is the radiance of God’s glory, the exact representation of His being, sustaining all things by His powerful word (Hebrews 1:3). In Him, the fullness of deity dwells, and through Him, the veil of darkness that once obscured our vision of the Father has been torn away.

To know this Light is to know life itself. It is not a distant flicker but a presence that dwells among us, transforming the ordinary into the extraordinary and the broken into whole. It illuminates paths we did not know existed and dispels fears that have long gripped our hearts.

    The Privilege of Being Witnesses

What an extraordinary privilege it is to be called to bear witness to this Light! John the Baptist exemplified this calling with unwavering resolve. He declared, "I am the voice of one calling in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way for the Lord’” (John 1:23). His life was a testimony of humility, obedience, and courage, as he pointed others not to himself, but to the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world (John 1:29).

As witnesses, we, too, are called to this sacred task. We are to stand as signposts, directing others toward the hope and salvation found in Christ. But let us not be mistaken—this calling is not a mere addition to our lives; it is the very essence of our purpose. To witness is to breathe, to live, and to move in the rhythm of the Spirit.

The Transformative Power of the Light

Beloved, consider for a moment the nature of light. It does not merely illuminate; it transforms. A dark room is not the same when a lamp is lit within it. Similarly, when the Light of Christ enters a life, that life is forever changed. The chains of sin are broken, the weight of shame is lifted, and the lost are found. This transformative power is not confined to the individual; it ripples outward, touching families, communities, and nations.

We must never underestimate the impact of our witness. When we allow Christ to shine through us, we become instruments of His grace, channels through which His light reaches into the farthest corners of the earth.

    The Humility of Witnesses

As we bear witness, let us guard our hearts against the subtle snares of pride. The role of a witness is not to draw attention to oneself but to the One we proclaim. Like John the Baptist, we must echo the words, "He must increase, but I must decrease" (John 3:30).

Humility does not mean shrinking back from our calling; it means embracing it with the right posture of heart. It means recognizing that our strength comes not from ourselves, but from the Spirit of God who empowers us. It means rejoicing not in our accomplishments, but in the advancing of His kingdom.

    The Cost of Witnessing

Let us also acknowledge the cost of bearing witness. To stand as a beacon of light in a world often shrouded in darkness is not without challenges. The message of the Gospel, though life-giving, is not always welcome. There will be times of rejection, persecution, and hardship. Yet, we are not without hope. The very Light we testify to is our source of strength and comfort. It is the Light that walks with us through the valleys and leads us to the mountaintops.

Jesus Himself assured us, "In this world, you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world" (John 16:33). As we face trials, let us remember that we do so not alone, but in the company of the One who has triumphed over all.

    A Global Mandate

Our witness must extend beyond our immediate surroundings. The Gospel is a message for all people, transcending borders, cultures, and languages. As ambassadors of Christ, we are called to carry this Light to the ends of the earth. This is not an optional task; it is the very heartbeat of the Great Commission: "Go and make disciples of all nations" (Matthew 28:19).

In this endeavor, let us not grow weary. The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Pray, therefore, that the Lord of the harvest would send out workers into His harvest field (Matthew 9:37-38). And as we pray, let us also go, trusting that He who calls us is faithful and will equip us for every good work.

    A Call to Action

Beloved, the Light has come into the world, and the world cannot remain the same. Let us rise to our calling with courage, humility, and joy. Let us live lives that radiate the love, truth, and grace of Christ. And let us remember always that we are not alone. The Spirit of God dwells within us, guiding, empowering, and sustaining us.

May we be found faithful in our witness. May our lives be a testament to the unchanging truth of the Gospel. And may the Light of Christ shine ever brighter through us, until the day He returns in glory.

To Him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, to Him be glory in the Church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen.
