Berean Standard Bible
Then He rebukes them in His anger, and terrifies them in His fury:
Then He rebukes them in His anger
This phrase highlights God's response to the rebellion of the nations and their leaders, as described earlier in the psalm. The concept of divine rebuke is consistent throughout Scripture, where God corrects and disciplines those who oppose His will (e.g., Psalm 6:1, Proverbs 3:12). The use of "anger" here underscores the seriousness of their defiance against God's anointed king, reflecting the righteous indignation of a holy God. In the biblical context, God's anger is not capricious but a just response to sin and rebellion. This rebuke can be seen as a form of divine judgment, which is a recurring theme in the prophetic literature (e.g., Isaiah 66:15-16).
and terrifies them in His fury:
The word "terrifies" indicates the overwhelming power and authority of God that instills fear in those who oppose Him. This is not merely a human fear but a recognition of the divine majesty and the consequences of standing against God's purposes. "Fury" suggests an intense, consuming wrath, which is often associated with God's judgment against sin (e.g., Nahum 1:6). The imagery here is reminiscent of the theophanies in the Old Testament, where God's presence is accompanied by awe-inspiring phenomena (e.g., Exodus 19:16-19). This phrase also foreshadows the eschatological judgment, where God's ultimate justice will be revealed (e.g., Revelation 19:15). The terrifying aspect of God's fury serves as a warning to the nations and a call to submit to His sovereign rule.

To the Saints in every land, in every tongue, and in every age:
Grace and peace to you from our Lord and King, Jesus Christ, whose reign is eternal, unshaken, and filled with mercy. I write to you, not with trembling words, but with firm assurance and divine conviction, as one compelled to share the truth of the Holy Scriptures.
Psalm 2:5 declares: “Then He will speak to them in His wrath, and terrify them in His fury.” The weight of these words cannot be underestimated, for they speak of the righteous indignation of the Lord God Almighty against the rebellion of nations and peoples who defy His sovereign authority. This verse is a sobering reminder that our Creator, who is slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love, is also holy and just, and His judgment is certain.
The context of this psalm points to the futility of human rebellion against God's divine rule. The kings of the earth plot in vain, seeking to cast off the cords of His authority, yet the Lord laughs at their schemes. It is in the midst of their pride and arrogance that He speaks—His words, fiery and full of wrath, cut through the chaos and declare His unshakable dominion.
Beloved, the wrath of God is not capricious or cruel; it is the outpouring of His holiness against all that stands opposed to His divine order. It is a call to repentance, a plea for the rebellious to humble themselves before the throne of grace. For even in judgment, the Lord extends His hand, offering redemption through the Son, the One anointed and seated at His right hand.
As we meditate on Psalm 2:5, let us heed its warning. Let us align our hearts and lives with His purposes, lest we find ourselves among those who provoke His fury. The Lord, who judges nations, also searches the hearts of individuals. How can we stand before Him except by the righteousness imparted to us through Christ Jesus? His wrath is terrifying, yet His mercy is all-encompassing for those who seek refuge in Him.
To those who waver, hear His call today. To those who harden their hearts, consider the frailty of your plans. To those who fear Him, rejoice in the security of His reign. And to all, may the truth of His sovereignty bring both solemnity and hope. For the same God who speaks in wrath will also speak words of salvation to those who turn to Him.
Now is the time to proclaim His kingdom, to invite the nations to kiss the Son and serve Him with fear and rejoicing. Let this psalm ignite within us the urgency to carry the message of His grace and truth to a world desperate for His light. Let it remind us that, while His wrath is certain, His mercy triumphs for all who find their shelter in Him.
May the words of Psalm 2 convict us, comfort us, and embolden us to live as ambassadors of His eternal kingdom. Go forth, proclaim His truth, and remember: He is our refuge, our strength, our peace, and our salvation.
